Congratulations, Maddie!

Here at Joey Porter's Pit Bulls, we're all about football -- and pit bulls, dogs generally, baseball, music, dames, hockey, politics, urban culture, movies, books, and all sorts of other aimless amusements.

Indulge us for a second for this feel-good story about
Maddie, the very sweet long-timer at the Animal Rescue League who was featured as Joey Porter's Pit Bulls' New Year's Dog of the Day.

A favorite of Animal Rescue League staffers and volunteers, Maddie's finally been adopted! Inexplicably, she'd been at the shelter for much longer than anybody would have anticipated, but now, thankfully, she is with a wonderful family and has her forever home.

It's always good to see shelter dogs get adopted, but especially gratifying when it's a dog like Maddie. She gets you at first look and makes you appreciate being alive. Congratulations, Maddie, a sweetheart, an inspiration and a true success story.

Lots of other wonderful dogs remain at the Animal Rescue League and need their own forever homes. We will continue to feature them every so often on Joey Porter's Pit Bulls, and we will, of course, continue to cover the Steelers and the human circus in general.

For now, we like to think Maddie's adoption is a portent of good things to come -- like a Steelers' victory on Sunday en route to a Super Bowl win next month.

Yeah. Good things to come.

No, Maddie is not living with Joey Porter's Pit Bulls, although I thought about adopting her -- as did nearly all the volunteers and staffers. She's special, but ...
there are plenty of other lovable dogs there, too. I'd adopt them all, if I could. I'm glad Maddie finally found a home.

They keep coming. Tonka is one of them. And, no, apparently he wasn't named for the toy trucks. Tonka is a Dakota-Sioux word for "great," and that he is.

Tonka's s a white Huskie with mystical Arctic-blue eyes who, I believe, will be adopted any day now. Then again, I never thought Maddie would be stuck in the shelter for as long she was; or, for that matter, poor Coda, too.

I am sure somebody will adopt Tonka soon. By the way, the only reason he's at the shelter is his family lost their home.

There are other great dogs there too, of course: Phillip (featured on JPPBs on Wednesday), Mac, Magellan, Thor, Hans, Sophie, King, Queen, Tessa, the list goes on and on.

I'd adopt them all if I could.
I hope they find homes soon.

One last note about Maddie. I was walking her the other day and, hell, a homeless guy stopped us and said:

"Aw, that's Maddie, isn't it? Yeah, I know her. She knows me! Look at her wagging that tail. Yeah, Maddie. I see her out for walks with you guys. I wanna adopt her. Yeah, maybe some day. She's my sweetie."

Everybody loved Maddie. Loves Maddie. I'm glad she found a nice home.

I hope the homeless guy does, too, and then finds a nice dog like Maddie.
